ARKON Suction mounts

We have 2x extended reach ARKON windshield mounts, bought because it reaches GPS further out than stock, or others.
Both Wife’s and mine mount too far away on stock unit.

Wife’s is fine: mine: suction cup has degraded. Won’t hold any more.
Couldn’t find same exact unit, But found shorter ARKON unit on EBay.
Gambled.
On receipt: found my long extension perfectly matches the new mount. Swap of parts. Clean windshield with alcohol. Dry.

Success! GPS back on windshield!!

Nice to hear. I had to give up suction cups because I couldn’t get them to stay on.

It Should be Noted..

Some states prohibit, or limit the location where suction cup devices can be legally mounted:

I bought something a long

I bought something a long time ago I think it was called "Sticky Cup" and that thing stuck like crazy., Pretty sure it was also made by ARKON. You'd almost need pliers to remove if from the windshield. If you did get it off all you needed to do was run it under water, let it dry and it got sticky all over again.

I used it in my work dump truck and it was there until I retired because of cancer and took it with me, was at least 5 or more years in a very bumpy, dusty riding environment truck, never fell off. I would dismount the Garmin each night but leave the cupo where it was.

In order to place the Garmin

In order to place the Garmin low on window, (was more of an issue for wife, than the state regulations… Wife didn’t want GPS blocking her view). So, it’s placed further (arm-reach) away due to its position on the window.
Why a longer mount was necessary. Fix one thing, cause different issue!

Lucky that all the ARKON mounts are same, Therefore you can buy a less $$ unit, then interchange arms !

I prefer bean bag mount.

My bean Bag mount works perfectly for me. I have a Chev Trax and there's a little recess in the middle of the dash, and the BB sits perfectly. It does not block my vision in any way, even with the larger DS 65.

I can mount it in the left hand corner if I want, but I prefer the center.

It also allows me to quickly lift off the BB with the GPS still attached and hide under the driver's seat, when I leave the car.

Glued mine

I bastardized my suction cup and permanently glued it to my dash. Mounted to the far left of the dash where I can easily reach it, out of my line of sight yet easy to see. If.. the next owner doesn't like it, tough but I get the benefit of years without my GPS falling off or sliding away. Permanently wired to an ACC source it's always there ready to use when the car is running.

x2 been using the bean bag

not for

gps but for phones. I don't use it often, but the suction cup mount to hold a phone, whatever material it is, it's almost impossible to get it off the windshield, even when you want to. It would seem those could be used for GPS as well. Again, I don't know how it works, just that it does. And they say to wash the suction cup after it's removed.

I am curious.....

What type of glue did you use? I have a second very old car where that option is possible. Thanks.

One additional Benefit of Bean Bag

Suction mounts leave a ring on the windshield, that tells a potential thief that there could be a GPS, or dash cam left in the car, that they might want to steal.

I mentioned I have one of those for my GPS above, made by Akron.

If..

If the what kind of glue was directed to me.. I used that Gorilla glue. Had to come up with an elaborate clamping system to hold it place while the glue sets as the location is almost vertical. To prevent the suction cup interfering I removed it and filled the cavity with hot glue to give it the same shape as the dash. While hot pressed it against the dash while on a piece of plastic to prevent it sticking. When cool trimmed the excess that had squeezed out an used a black marker to “paint” the exposed bits. Gorilla glue expands as it sets so the bits that squeezed out had to be trimmed as well.. and “painted”
Took a lot of fiddling but in the end looks very professional, almost OEM..

Suction mount

I also gave up on suction mounts b/c they kept falling off my windshield. I use the friction mount whic works well but I wish I could position it closer to me. Flat surface is too far away.

I also gave up on suction cup mounts and switched to beanbag & friction types. Like you, the flat spots on my vehicle dash were not convenient for easy GPS viewing.

I solved the problem using some scrap metal I had laying around. I cut pieces to fit on the flat parts of the dash, and screwed them together with another piece of scrap. I screwed a RAM mount to the top and used these anti slip pads to hold the metal pieces in place:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09C289XMN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b...

The rig allows the GPS to sit forward on the dash, lifts off easily to store, won't mark the surface, and holds firmly under harsh stops, starts & turns.

The idea works so well, I made mounts for my other two vehicles.

bean bag mount and suction cup

I still use bean bag mount on my car. I can put away (hide) when not driving. I keep my suction cup when travel with rental car as it is easy to carry with.

Up to yesterday I used a Garmin disc mount. I had found a worn, but not broken bean bag mount at the thrift store a few weeks prior. After fixing it up using the foam gripper stuff used to stop carpets from moving I ended up having to switch to it. Why? The adhesive peeled away from the DISC, causing my DS65 to nearly take a header. I can only speculate that this failure was due to age: the disc had sat unused in my 1300LM box since 2010.

Bean bag mount works best

Bean bag mount works best for me.

my own mount

I can use a bean bag mount in my Toyota SUV as the dash / windshield has enough clearance. I have two other cars where that is not the case. As others stated, suction cups do not work for me either.

I designed a custom mount and 3D printed it. I then use cable velcro straps to attach it to the passenger center console handhold. It has worked great. I've shared the 3D drawing with two others with the same car.

My other car which is from the 1960s also needs a custom mount. My plan is to create a mount that fits in the dash's ashtray, lol. I will 3D print that one too. I have a prototype of it. It has adjustable arm sections and a ball socket joint. I need to create the part that secures it to the ashtray. There is a cigarette outlet in the pull out ashtray making it a perfect location.

nice setup.

Problem Free Suction Mount

The original cup mount that came with my 3597, I keep mine stored in an airtight reclosable (aka ZipLock) bag stored in the console. I keep a paper napkin handy to wipe contaminates away from the mount spot on the windshield, remove the suction mount from the bag, and use my breath to slightly moisten the cup, followed by a gentle wipe with my palm before a follow-up breath and apply to the windshield. Still plenty of pliability and suction in any time of year.
