Black Friday / Cyber Monday - 2011

We're only about 2 weeks away from Thanksgiving now, so it's time to start up the holiday shopping thread.

Any great deals you find interesting are fair game. It's okay to go beyond GPS.

Let's use this thread up to Cyber Monday, and then I'll start another one for December Holidays.

I've been keeping my eye on 60" TVs too. I also have price alerts set up for a few Garmin GPS models I'm watching and am looking into changing to a smart phone and a data plan for the wife & me.

Just a suggestion, but a

Just a suggestion, but a recent addition to the "shopping holidays" is Small Business Saturday. It falls on the Saturday after Black Friday (11/26/11). I love the idea, and support shopping locally! Maybe a Small Business Saturday thread could be incorporated somehow too. Just a thought.

I'll be looking for...

A new Garmin, preferably a voice-activated model.

An Xbox 360 with Kinect package.

Since I don't like in-person shopping, I'm looking for online deals; any links are appreciated. Intrigued by the concept of price alerts - don't know how to do this but I've got to go look!

For the Canucks on the board

For the Canucks on the board this is usually a site with good information, worth checking out:

It has a fair amount of US information also. The first US flyers are up already.

Amazing how fast the prices are dropping for all these gadgets.

Retail Tactics

I read an article saying that some stores (including Best Buy) will not have barcodes on items in order to reduce price comparisons via smart-phones. And also that some online stores will be having "mobile device" sales (not general internet...only via smart-type phone) to try to steal business from those standing in long lines.
Interesting stuff. Markets operate most efficiently when the customer is an informed customer.

as long..

As long as its a deal, which we pretty much know what the price is, if we're looking for it, saves some ink and don't put on the barcodes.

Black Friday Before-Deal

Amazon today brought the Tom Tom 2535M Live down to 209.00 - Best so far?

First--As much griping as we Garmin owners do at times, take a look at the POI Factory's Garmin/Magellan/TomTom forums and note that the vast majority of posts are in Garmin. That probably reflects the % of ownership as well. If you buy a GPS and have questions about how to do things, you'll get quicker responses with a Garmin GPS question for sure (and, quicker responses as well if you're a PC user rather than a Mac computer owner).

Second--Map updates get bigger each time. Buy a model that has onboard storage for the future. See:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375
I will strongly suggest avoiding models with less than 4GB of Internal Memory.

Third--This can be an active item for discussion, but for me, I'd only buy a GPS now with lifetime maps, whether a Garmin LM (or LMT) model or a non-LM model and a standalone lifetime map purchase. The LM and LMT combos will almost certainly be cheaper than buying a LM subscription later.

4th--once again, an item of active discussion--but for me, Lane Assist and Junction View are very desirable.

5th--I haven't thought about this but if buying Garmin, think about the new 2012 models and compare them to older still-available models. On one hand, a 2012 model may be discontinued after the earlier models have been discontinued so you'll be up-to-date longer; on the other hand, if there are bugs in the new models, there may be a period of time as you wait for firmware fixes while older models may be debugged if you buy now.

Your New Garmin

Look at the Garmin 1490LMT this must be one of the best overall performing PND's on the market, if you check out all the posts and the details from the link below this may well be a great deal with all the goodies on board and lifetime maps and traffic - Good luck hope this helps.
My personal experience with 2012 Models was terrible, they have all gone back, I bought the Tom TOM 2535M live yesterday from Amazon for $209.00

Garmin Maps and nuvis

Info from a Garmin email:

Starting today, save up to 40% on select Garmin GPS products, maps and accessories.

Hurry! These special Black Friday prices are available only at garmin.com until 11:59 p.m. CST Monday, Nov. 28.

numaps lifetime - $69.99
numaps onetime - $29.99
also, a couple nuvis are offered

I expect that Garmin will charge S&H so other web sites like Amazon may still be cheaper. But a price drop straight from Garmin for maps may be reflected on lower special prices from other sites or brick&mortars this Friday or next Monday. The email suggests that no special codes are needed to obtain these discounts.

Have a great TurkeyDay--Go Packers!

Holiday Hopes

Me, I'm looking only for world peace and stable ecconomies. That's not too much to wish for, is it? Haven't seen any recent ads for either of them though...

I picked up a 1300LM at

I picked up a 1300LM at Sam's Club today for $89 plus tax. It was that or hop on the 40LM from Radio Shack et al. I went to BB last night for the midnight sale as they had the 40 for $85, but when I saw lines out to the street I turned around and came home. Couldn't really find any info to determine the difference between the 40 and 1300, so I went with the one at Sam's only because crowds weren't so bad there. Just updated firmware, downloading map update now.

40LM has 2 versions

More expensive unit (010-00990-20)includes Canada while cheaper version (010-00990-21)does not. Also has lane assist and junction view. $40 difference seems alot for including Canada but knowing if I go to Canada my GPS is a brick makes me want to spend the extra.
