Email Offer of a TomTom (possible scam)

I'm putting this content into the general discussion group because a Garmin user may get an email similar to what I've received. I don't currently own a TomTom although I did almost 20 years ago. Anyway it is an email offer to get a new TomTom. The email comes from noreply@emails.tomtom.com and has a "Buy Now" button to receive a 35% discount on a new purchase.

The caution of course is this could be a scam and the general advice is not to click on a link in an email unless you know or can verify the sender.

You can review the link url.

You can review the link url. If it points to a legitimate site (ie *.garmin.com or *.tomtom.com), then it's unlikely to be a scam.

Of course these days most companies use third parties for their email campaigns. The urls in these emails, while generally legit, are quite obfuscated because they're used for click tracking purposes - who/when, for how long, etc.

You can use https://checkshorturl.com/ to expand the short url to see where it's going to. Keep in mind, those obfuscated urls are unique. That is, 2 people signed up for the same mailing list will get urls with different codes in them, so even using the above will likely trigger a tracking even for your email address.

no, its real

I get them in the update software,
for the hunting model every time I plug it in, its got like 100km from the cabin -but every trail and rock
monthly almost emails for the Australia NZ one -its on the dash in Tennant Creek, have to ask the copper to turn it on so it updates and stops bugging me -small town, the keys are in the van, at the airport, next to the police station

the current "I'm in Canada" unit already holds the whole world land and ocean Nav maps, it never gets the emails

they plan on getting everybody who has an old tomtom to one that fits the world map
cheaper map updates if there is only one map for them

It would seem that way in your case since you are getting the offer via the update process. However the offer tendered to me was via an email and I haven’t used a TomTom in 19 years. So I’m reluctant to click on the “offer” button, even if only to investigate further.

Are you suggesting it will cost them less to supply all these new units at a discount than to maintain fragmented map versions? But will the abandoned customers put up with it?

Tomtom Upgrade

I received the "your device is no longer supported and the 35% discount offer that leads to a dead page.

Got an updated email saying it was all a mistake and my device is still supported and will get map updates.

I like Tomtom for the voices and the updated GPS locations for speedcameras for my occasional trips to the UK when I use a Rider 550.

I use a Zumo XT in Canada and US and bought European Maps which I can't update (a pet peeve of mine).

Checking out Tomtom's current offerings, theres nothing geared towards motorcycle use and their subscription plan just plain sucks
