2024.20

Garmin Employee: Hey boss, there's a lot of interest in us releasing an updated map. What should we do?

Garmin Boss: What was the last map named?

Garmin Employee: 2024.10

Garmin Boss: Hmm, better let the name catch up with the year. Release 2024.20 in June 2024.

Garmin Employee: (Smacks forehead) Of course, makes total sense. Thanks

At this point, Garmin might as well drop ALL Windows Support, as with no new maps, what’s the difference? No Support, No New Maps=Same thing! ??

Or is it the few folks working on maps at Garmin all retired, and there is no staff remaining to do the work??

maps

how much longer is garmin going to give free lifetime maps away ? what is life time to them on a certain model to expire ? they dont make a dime on free maps and there in the business to make money so how much longer will i get free maps on my 1450 ? not much longer i bet !

Garmin Navigator Guess On Updates

I expect Garmin Navigator is a dwindling business for Garmin and they are committing fewer resources and time to the business. This is probably the reason we see fewer updates and longer times between updates.

Nope

No updated map for Labor Day travels.

few map updates

Rather disappointed in the lack of map updates. There are a variety of new roads near me that are not on the current map. Not the end of the world, but disappointing if we only get 1 update a year.

Seeing Garmin just released Garmin Express 7.18.4.0 maybe there is hope for the NA version.

map update4

it has been a while...

Wishful thinking?

Wishful thinking I would say. Past history has shown there is little relationship between the Garmin map update schedule and Garmin Express updates. Not saying it has never happened that Garmin put off a map update to fix a GE problem, but I think that scenario is rare at best. Garmin will release the next NA map update when it is ready. It would appear that they may be down to 2 updates per year ... maybe one?

One thing I have thought about is the massive amount of road construction going on in the US this summer as a result of the government infrastructure funding bill. I know in my area things have been torn up all summer. All those changes could be creating a lot of road changes that need to be included in the next map update. That's just a guess on my part. Only Garmin knows the hows and whys of when they release map updates.

I think..

Garmin is too busy with its daily GE updates that it has no time for maps. Well past the twice a year updates, yearly now seems the next option and won't belong before maps are.. once in a while, mayby.

New Interstates

Given the changes in Indiana you must won't how they serve keep up. They are changing interchanges of I465, adding I69 bridges and overpasses, and major interchanges on what was a simple right turn. All south of Indpls.
Just a mess causing 4 and 5 mile backups at slow times of the day!

Another Week

Maybe this week will be the one? If not shameless bump. smile

IMHO

After all the years I've owned Garmin portable Auto GPS units I know for certain that the map will never be accurate on the day it is released. That's impossible because they have to be programed and tested (we hope). I think they only fairly accurate for urban areas and sorely lacking for rural areas - at least a year behind, if not more.

I think Garmin is beginning to realize that this is a failing market and will slowly let it die. They can't compete with the vast majority of people having smart phones with routing capabilities at their fingertips that doesn't require them to manually load and play with software updates just to get a map.

And really, nobody but this group here really cares if that market dies tomorrow. Even if they happen to have a Garmin GPS they probably don't ever update it, and maybe even are beginning to realize that the smartphone option is even better.

And let's not forget that the car manufacurers have installed navigation screens in the console, yes, it's not up to date, but does anyone care? Everybody I know that uses onboard navigation, just lives with the missing roads AND uses a cell phone map system.

The market is dead. But I'll continue to have one mounted on my dash as long as I can, because I don't like the format of cell phone mapping and routing.

But none-the-less, Garmin probably sees bigger profits from their wearable market. Hence all the GE updates.

The last 2 map updates still show my Dr’s office location in the middle of an open field. And when I try to enter the address, it’s says “xxx address could not be found”. The strip mall he’s at has been there for almost 3 years.

I agree that the GPS market is dead. For the majority of the people, why buy a GPS when you can use your smartphone and you get more updated information. To get updated or more info on a Garmin GPS you have to link it with your smartphone. How stupid is that. I still like my Garmins but my DS55 will be my last GPS I buy.

Another Week Gone By

Seems like it's taking forever this year.

Another voice of doom??

There seems to be some agreement that stand-alone auto GPSs are a dying product. Yesterday's NYTimes had an article titled "GPS Watch? No Thanks. Top Runners Are Ditching the Data." Another voice of doom??

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/16/sports/gps-watches-profes...

I think that's comparing

I think that's comparing apples to oranges.

But really, the artivle is talking about "top" runners. I seriously doubt that most "top" runners, cyclists, etc, have any interest in seeing the GPS of where they are competing. But I bet that they are recording their health and performance stats, and the GPS is of minor importance.

This is a marketing issue and well thought out positions aren't relevant. When I was in my 50s I played at being a serious cyclist. If the big boys (who were actually small) used free (to them) carbon fiber brake levers then the wanna-bees like me absolutely had to have carbon fiber brake levers. If the big boy runners go for the bare-wrist look it'll catch on.
